Chairperson’s Message

Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Balamand.

Civil Engineering involves planning and designing different types of structures such as buildings, bridges, highways, tunnels, dams, etc. This discipline tremendously evolved over the past decades due to rapid population growth and industrial activities, coupled with the need to improve the quality and sustainability of construction. The mission of our Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is to provide an academic environment where professional education and practices can be integrated, scholarly research for improving engineering materials and structures can be conducted, and the society interest can be served through the advancement of knowledge.

The Civil Engineering program at the University of Balamand consists of an undergraduate program (i.e., Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Engineering (BE)) and a graduate program (i.e., Master of Science (MS)). The undergraduate program consists of 109 credits for BS and 146 credits for BE, while the graduate program consists of 47 credits (in addition to the 109 credits required for BS) with concentration in Structures, Transportation, Environment, Geotechnical, Management, Water Resources, and Earthquake. Our department is equipped with high-quality teaching facilities, computer-aided design software tools, and state-of-the-art laboratories to support learning processes and research activities. Our professors are highly qualified professionals and active members in various related technical societies and committees.

Program Educational Objectives

BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
In harmony with the University and Faculty missions, the Program Educational Objectives for graduates of the bachelor’s degree programs in Civil Engineering are:

  • - Benefiting from a different and strong technical foundation, become adept in analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving, enabling them to contribute to a variety of primary engineering roles within the various fields of civil engineering or successfully pursue graduate civil engineering studies.

  • - Exhibiting true professionalism, together with an aptitude to lead, a sense of ethical and societal responsibility, and a readiness to be engaged in lifelong learning.

  • - Effectiveness in teamwork in an interdisciplinary context, communicating with broader technical communities in written, oral, and visual formats.

  • - Actively promoting innovation in /response to the many emerging technologies, social developments, and contemporary issues of the day.

  • - Acquiring the necessary practical tools and skills that allow them to enter the domain of professional work, empowering them with the newest techniques and technologies used in the fields of design and construction.


MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
In harmony with the University and Faculty missions, the Program Educational Objectives for the Master of Science in Civil Engineering Program:

  • - The graduates of the program will, by selecting an option, acquire a more focused knowledge in at least one specialized field of civil engineering, in addition to a comprehensive knowledge in other fields of this discipline.

  • - The graduates of the program will acquire the desire for research and innovation in at least one specialized field of civil engineering that will enable them to succeed as professional civil engineers with proper team-work and ethical attitudes, and to pursue doctoral education.

  • - The graduates of the program will maintain the desire for engagement in lifelong learning in response to emerging technologies, social developments, and contemporary issues - environmental, economic, health, and energy issues.



Student Outcomes

The Program in Civil Engineering provides graduated students with a solid educational base that allows them to pursue successful careers or move on to graduate studies and learn how to ensure sustainable development in the field of civil engineering or related fields. Assuming the Program Educational Objectives have been achieved, the Faculty of Engineering in general, and the Civil Engineering Department expects that these ABET “a” through “k” student outcomes will follow:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.

  2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.

  3. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

  4. An ability to function in multidisciplinary teams.

  5. An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.

  6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.

  7. An ability to communicate effectively.

  8. The insight, stemming from a broad educational background, to gauge the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.

  9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, lifelong learning.

  10. An awareness and understanding of contemporary issues.

  11. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Undergraduate Programs

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
The BS in Civil Engineering Program is designed to prepare students for the professional job market through the pursuit of comprehensive studies in the field. It aims at equipping students with a solid knowledge of the engineering sciences and appropriate general and specialized skills, enabling them to develop into well-rounded civil engineers. Our BS program includes 109 credits.





BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
The BE in Civil Engineering Program augments the BS Program through imparting to students in-depth knowledge in specific areas, thus adding to their practical and general skills. Students are exposed to applied-learning experiences in synergy, which meet the requirements for registration in the Lebanese Order of Engineers. Our BE program includes 146 credits.




Graduate Programs

Graduates may apply for advanced study leading to a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering, provided he/she has obtained the required averages in the undergraduate programs of studies, either immediately following the BS degree or after completing the BE degree. The Faculty Admissions Committee makes the final decision on acceptance to the Master of Science program.

CIVIL ENGINEERING LAB
The Civil Engineering Laboratory (CIEL) at UOB is primarily committed to the development of the civil engineering students at both undergraduate and graduate levels as well as to academic research purposes. Besides the offered courses taught in the laboratory, we have many ongoing projects that enhance the students’ learning abilities and provide them with hands-on experience related to civil engineering. Our versatile staff members happily guide our students during and outside laboratory sessions. We also offer testing services professionally and accurately for various outside construction companies.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LAB
The Environmental Engineering Laboratory (EEL) at the University of Balamand provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, essential for a thriving university research program. It includes instruments such as GC/MS, IC, spectrometer, a microbiology laboratory, and other such equipment. EEL is designed primarily to serve UOB faculty members, and their graduate and undergraduate students from other universities in Lebanon, the Middle East region, or the world. The Laboratory serves research in most disciplines, including the basic sciences of chemistry, biology and engineering. The Laboratory's activities are focused on the four major pollution areas: air, soil, water, biota wastes, and various other substances. EEL includes areas and equipment for the bench, and pilot-scale research on water, wastewater, and sludge treatment. Also, field equipment is available for data and sample collection; in-situ testing and analysis of air quality; groundwater and surface water investigation; and water and wastewater treatment. The laboratory is continuously upgraded with the latest environmental equipment, and the addition of new instruments is controlled by research needs and trends to make sure that our students and researchers have access to the most advanced systems and can thus compete with international researchers.
 
It lays great emphasis on allowing graduate students to participate as active learners, not as observers in its divisions. The laboratory also provides commercial as well as community testing services in the above areas, while members of its academic staff offer expert advice to industry and government.

OTHER UNIVERSITY FACILITIES
Collaboration with other University facilities is available, such as the Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Sciences Laboratories for Atomic Absorption, Granulometer, Elemental Analyzer, Flame Photometer, HPLC and Mobile Station for monitoring particulate matters; the GIS Center for the application of computer-based GIS systems in courses works and projects; and the Institute of Environment for marine equipment.



SOFTWARE LAB
Licensed Engineering Software Packages are available in our computer laboratories to back-up the civil engineering courses, as well as to be used by our students as tools helping them in doing their graduation thesis/projects, class projects, and homework. These software packages, listed below, are also available to faculty members for educational and research purposes.
