Chairperson’s Message

Allow me to welcome you to the Electrical Engineering Department (EED) at the University of Balamand.

Electrical Engineering, the most diversified of all engineering professions, is the backbone of technology that serves society for the betterment of mankind. Electrical Engineers not only make life brighter, easier, and more pleasurable but also they design processes so that systems can run smoother, more efficient, and cost effective taking into consideration health and environmental constraints.

The EED follows the American system of higher education. It offers three programs namely, the Bachelor of Science (BS), the Bachelor of Engineering (BE), and the Master of Science (MS). The EED equalizes the Lebanese Baccalaureate with the first year (the freshman year) and consequently students can complete the BSEE in three years and for one additional year with a summer, students can earn the BEEE. Both BSEE and BEEE students can continue their higher education to earn the MSEE. The EED students have access to state of the art laboratories and computer facilities that not only make learning challenging and enjoyable but also would instill in them the spirit of competitiveness. Some of our EED graduates have practiced the profession and others have pursued their higher education worldwide.

Program Educational Objectives

The BS program in Electrical Engineering is designed to prepare students for the professional job market and to pursue graduate study or specialization. The program provides students with a solid and diversified foundation in engineering sciences and appropriate general and specialized skills to enable them to develop into well-rounded Electrical Engineers. More specifically, the Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) aimed for within five years of graduation are stated as follows:

  1. Core Knowledge: Our graduates will be able to apply the acquired background in electrical, electronic, and digital systems in the practice of an electrical engineering profession, or to pursue graduate studies in electrical engineering;
  2. Application of Knowledge: Our graduates will be able to solve general electrical engineering problems, and to design electrical, electronic, and digital systems;
  3. Professionalism: Our graduates will apply proper interpersonal and communication skills to be productive members in a teamwork environment, and to act professionally and ethically;
  4. Life-long Learning: Our graduates will engage in professional growth and lifelong development activities, and will reflect insight into contemporary and emerging issues and their implications to engineering practice.


Student Outcomes

The BS Program in Electrical Engineering provides graduated students with a solid educational base that allows them to pursue successful careers or move on to graduate studies and learn how to ensure sustainable development in the field of electrical engineering or related fields. The Program focuses on the acquisition of the core knowledge required for a career in electrical engineering, the application of such knowledge in addressing and solving engineering problems, the analysis and design of electrical systems, the professionalism that an electrical engineer must consistently display, and the continuous self-improvement that must characterize both his university and working years. Assuming the Program Educational Objectives (as given above) have been achieved, the Faculty of Engineering in general, and the Electrical Engineering Department expect that this ABET “a” through “k” student outcomes will follow:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.

  2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.

  3. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

  4. An ability to function in multidisciplinary teams.

  5. An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.

  6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.

  7. An ability to communicate effectively.

  8. The insight, stemming from a broad educational background, to gauge the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.

  9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, lifelong learning.

  10. An awareness and understanding of contemporary issues.

  11. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Undergraduate Programs

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
The Program of the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering is designed to prepare students for the professional job market through the pursuit of comprehensive studies in the field. It aims at equipping students with a solid knowledge of the engineering sciences and appropriate general and specialized skills, enabling them to develop into well-rounded electrical engineers. Our BS Program includes 109 credits.





BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
The Program of the Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Electrical Engineering augments the BS Program through imparting to students in-depth knowledge in specific areas, thus adding to their practical and general skills. Students are exposed to applied-learning experiences in synergy, which meet the requirements for registration in the Lebanese Order of Engineers. Our BE program includes 146 credits.







Graduate Programs

Graduates may apply to pursue advanced study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MS) provided he/she has obtained the required averages in the undergraduate programs of study, either immediately following the BS degree or after completing the BE degree. The Faculty Admissions Committee makes the final decision on acceptance to the Master of Science Program. The Department offers advanced graduate studies in our specialized fields: Biomedical Engineering, Robotics and Mechatronics, Power and Control, and Telecommunications.

Facilities

Over the last twenty years, the Department has established advanced and well-equipped laboratories intended to consolidate and support classroom learning. It features 10 technical laboratories in addition to two computing facilities shared with other departments. The total surface area of technical laboratory facilities is approximately 600m2.

The laboratories are attended by experienced personnel with extensive technical experience and have equipment ranging from necessary tools to more sophisticated computing and communication systems. These labs make use of modern equipment in the computer engineering areas of digital hardware, embedded circuitry, VLSI, networking, cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things.
