Welcome to the website of the Engineering Management department.

The Engineering Management department offers courses on the graduate level only, that lead the student to a “Masters of Science in Engineering Management” (MSEM).

The Engineering Management is a scientific discipline, which combines engineering knowledge of modeling and solving (engineering) problems with project management skills, mainly planning, organizing, leading and controlling, in addition to operations management knowledge.

It is observed that both the Lebanese, and regional market have shown a growth in engineering and management. Hence, an increasing demand for professionals with joint engineering and management skills is envisaged.

An Engineering Management professional career brings together the technological problem-solving savvy of engineering and the organizational, administrative, and planning abilities of management in order to oversee complex enterprises from conception to completion.

Thus, it is noticed that professional ‘practicing engineers’ wishing to gain in-depth management skills are seeking academic training in universities. On the other hand, undergraduate engineering students, interested in an engineering management career are in need of pursuing a graduate level of academic training.

The Masters’ program of Engineering Management at the University Of Balamand is designed to bridge the knowledge gap between engineering and management. It equips practicing engineers and fresh graduate engineers with skills in engineering problems modeling and a strong mathematical knowledge in solving these problems on one hand, and with skills in project and operations management on the other.

In order to attract i) practicing engineers dealing with management issues, and ii) graduate students from architecture, civil, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering departments and schools; the Engineering Management program focuses on preparing both parties to acquire the Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate, by focusing on the project management body of knowledge. The program also equips students with strong mathematical background, training them to model and solve multi-tasks and mulit-natured engineering problems.

Program Educational Objectives

The Engineering Management program at the University Of Balamand has the following educational objectives and strategic objectives:

I. Educational Objectives:
  1. Equip students with strong engineering mathematical skills.

  2. Equip students with strong engineering modeling skills.

  3. Instil in students effective professional project management skills.



II. Strategic Objectives
  1. Affiliation or partnership with the Project Management Institute (PMI), so that the program becomes an official path to get the PMP certification.

  2. Prepare students to Ph.D. level studies, by emphasizing on advanced engineering mathematical and statistical knowledge, in addition to joint technical and managerial skills.

  3. Link with the industry

  4. Organize seminars and conferences.





Student Outcomes

The graduate from the Engineering Management Program is an engineer who can:

  • - Mathematically model and solve engineering problems of various kinds.

  • - Design experiments and perform advanced statistical analyses.

  • - Demonstrate acquisition of professional project-management skills.

  • - Apply risk-management to multi-disciplinary projects.

  • - Utilize financial, accounting and administrative-management knowledge.

  • - Apply engineering economy with advanced project life-cycle cost analysis.

  • - Apply advanced project-management skills, such as critical-chain management, and cost/time trade-off.

  • - Acquire the professional skills needed for the PMP Certificate exam.

  • - Apply modern techniques in human resources, team building, motivation theory, and leadership.

  • - Acquire leadership, professional, management, and strategic planning skills.

  • - Apply sustainability in engineering.

  • - Manage projects applying principles of maintainability and reliability.

  • - Behave ethically, professionally, and responsibly.

Graduate Programs

Graduates may apply for advanced study leading to a Master of Science Degree in Engineering Management, provided he/she has obtained the required averages in the undergraduate programs of studies, either immediately following the BS degree or after completing the BE degree. The Faculty Admissions Committee makes the final decision regarding entry into the Master of Science Program.

In order to be eligible for the Master in Engineering Management Program, a student must have a Bachelor degree (BS) in civil, mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering, or else in architecture, and must satisfy the requirements of the University of Balamand for admission into engineering graduate studies. A typical engineering management curriculum is a mixture of mathematical modelling of engineering problems and project management topics. All students pursuing a Master's degree in Engineering Management must complete 47 credits.
